Research and Teaching

The IES has selected four major topics that are of both national and regional significance. These topics are the focus interdisciplinary staff research and teaching and of graduate theses.

Arid Land Management

The research in this area investigates both the desert encroachment problems and the effect of the ambitious desert encroachment control and rehabilitation program.  It also studies the increasing environmental degradation associated with conversion of the Savanna into dry or irrigated farm land.  The problem of desertification is a complex one, involving interactions among human, animal, plant and physical systems, and is therefore, ideally suited to the institute’s interdisciplinary research approach.

Freshwater Ecosystems Management

This is exemplified by the Blue Nile Basin Project which aims to assess and monitor the human impact on the basin area . The overall objective is to examine the effect of farming, livestock raising, deforestation and growth of human settlements on land degradation, water quality and hydroelectric power generation.

Urban and Regional Management

This is confined at present to the health, sanitation, pollution and transportation problems of the Khartoum area with its growing industry and population, and the ever-increasing migration from rural areas.

Coastal Zone Management:

This is exemplified by the Red Sea coast area where a wide range of present and potential environmental problems exist.  These are associated with industrialization around Port Sudan and concomitant water supply and marine and freshwater pollution problems.  Pollution of Red Sea coastal water is also affecting fisheries, oyster farming and coral reefs, and there is serious concern over the environmental effects of the planned of extraction of Red Sea minerals and construction of oil pipelines
