DEPARTMENT OF FOLKLORE

INTRODUCTION

The study of folklore is interdisciplinary in nature. It is closely related to anthropology, history, literature, psychology etc. The character of folklore study is reflected in the Department's programme of collection, research and courses. The Department program aims at:

Folklore Survey
The collection of Sudanese oral traditions and items of material culture is one of the ongoing projects of the department. Besides the staff members, students, teachers, local government officials and rural development officials have participated in the folklore survey. Folklore students have taken this activity as part of their training in collection, preservation and analysis of folklore materials, both oral traditions and cultural articrafts.

The Department offers courses leading to the following degrees:

The Diploma in Folklore
is awarded after the successful completion a one year program of full-time study, comprising of a number of courses.

The Master in Arts Degree in Folklore
is awarded after the successful completion of a two-year programme of full-time study. comprising of course-work, field research and a dissertation of not less than 30,000 words based upon the student own research.

The Ph.D. Degree in Folklore
is awarded after the successful completion of three courses relevant to the candidate's dissertation topic. Candidates will be required to demonstrate a reading knowledge of a language significant within the area of their proposed dissertations (in addition to their mother tongue and a European Language). The dissertation will be examined after a minimum of 24 calendar months from the successful completion of the three courses.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for the Post-graduate Diploma must have received a general degree from the University of Khartoum or its equivalent from another university.

Candidate for the MA in Folklore must have obtained a P.G.D. from the IAAS or an Honour Degree from the University of Khartoum or its equivalent from another university.

Candidates for a Ph.D. degree must fulfill the university's General Regulations for a Ph.D. as well as specific departmental regu-lations, candidates must have obtained an MA in Folklore. On recommendation of the Board of the Institute and approval of the Graduate College Board, candidates with an MA in a related discipline from the University of Khartoum, or another university may be considered for admission to the Ph.D. course.
