About The Faculty
 

             
               
         

Foundation:

 

The Faculty of Mathematics was started as a department within the School of Science in Gordon Memorial College in 1936. In 1978 the Senate of the University decided to merge the departments of Mathematics of the faculties of Science, Engineering and Education, under the administration of one Faculty, named the School of Mathematical Sciences, which in 1995 became the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences.

 
   

This change was accompanied by academic improvements that resulted in restructuring and upgrading the courses.

 
   

The building of the Faculty is located in the central campus at the Southern side of Sharia El Gama to the West of the University Administration.

 
   

Teaching Staff:

 

The faculty has (19) members of the teaching staff:
(7) Associate Professors
(6) Assistant Professors
(6) Lecturers

In addition to (17) teaching assistants.

Students:

 

The number of the B.Sc. students in the Faculty is currently (450). In the academic year (1997-98), (119) students graduated.(775) students graduated since the establishment of the Faculty in all specializations. About (370) students were awarded the Post Graduate Diploma, (375) students were awarded the Master’s degree and (66) students were awarded the Ph.D. degree.

   

The Library and Laboratories:

 

The Faculty has its own special library that accommodates one hundred students and contains more than (5000) books. The Faculty has laboratories containing advanced computer amounting to one hundred at the present. The Faculty is provided with Internet access.

   

Research Activities:

 

The members of the teaching staff are engaged in research in the following fields: Biostatistics, Complex Analysis, Non-linear Phenomena, Waves, Computer Sciences, Algebraic Topology, Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Analysis and Statistical Inference.

 

   

Activities:

 
a-

Since the eighties, the Faculty to provide a programme for an Applied Diploma, this aims at providing the students with the required skills for using the computer and its utilization for the sake of improving their performance in their domain. This programme is offered biannually and its duration is six months.

   
b-

The Faculty has organized two international conferences: The Development (Shifting) of Sands and Desertification in Dry Regions. The Faculty has also arranged a workshop on Medical Statistics.

   

 Cultural Relations:

 

The Faculty has special relationships with the International Centre of Theoretical Physics, the Third World Academy of Science in Italy and the University of Liverpool. A number of the teaching staff of the Faculty were affiliated to the Centre of Theoretical Physics and cooperated in its academic activity. The Centre has provided the Faculty with Computer equipment and academic books as well as support for holding academic conferences.
