About The Faculty
 

             
               
         

Foundation:

 

The Faculty of Law started in 1903 as the School of Sharia Judges in Gordon memorial College. In 1936 the School of the Law was established for the purpose of teaching law and awarding a diploma in law under the supervision of the Legal Secretary. In 1947 the School was incorporated as the Faculty of Law in the University College of Khartoum which was in special relationship with the University of London. In 1956 the University College of Khartoum was elevated to full university status and thereafter, the Faculty of Law started to offer Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) Degree.

The Faculty of Law is located among the buildings of the central campus.

 
   

Objectives:

 

The Faculty aims to prepare its students for the pursuit of the different legal professions as well as other administrative functions associated with the law.

 
   

Teaching Staff:

 

The Faculty has (13) members of the teaching staff with the following status:
(1) Emeritus Professor
(2) Visiting Fellows'
(1) Professors
(3) Associate Professors
(3) Assistant Professors
(3)  Lecturers

There are (4) teaching assistants.

   

Students:

 

The Faculty has (580) Sudanese students and (21) foreign students. Since its foundation about (2073) students have graduated from the Faculty. Of these (122) students graduated in (1997-1998). Science 1961, the Faculty has awarded (647) Post Graduate Diploma; (128) LL.M. degrees and (12) Ph.D. degrees.

 
   

The Library:

 

The Faculty has a specialized library which contain (90,000) books. The reading room accommodates (250) students. It is the only exclusive Legal Library in the country. Apart from the students and members of the teaching staff the library is open to member of the legal profession and other researchers.

   

Research Activities:

 

1-

The Faculty began a programme of authentication and Arabicization and follow-up of innovations in Sudanese Laws in accordance with the policies of the National Council for Higher Education. This phase was completed in 1994.

 

2- The academic activity of the Faculty is centred on the researches undertaken by the students as well as the studies accomplished by members of the teaching staff in the different departments. The Faculty cooperates with the higher judicial quarters in training legal professionals and in providing legal consultancies.  
3- The Faculty organizes seminars and discussion sessions about the problems of Law and the community and those relating to legal education and performance.  
4- The Faculty offers free legal advice to members of the University through the Legal Aid Office run by the students. It also participates in drafting statutes and regulations of the University.  
     

 Cultural Relations:

 

The Faculty has academic relations with some Arab and European Universities, such as the University of Oxford and London. The relationship involves the training of members of the teaching staff and the exchange of studies, publications and periodicals.
