About The Faculty

             
               
         

Foundation:

 

The school of Hygiene was established in 1933 by the Sudan Medical Science to train medical health officials who were charged with monitoring environmental health and assisted in control and prevention of epidemic and endemic diseases. The teaching staff was British. The students were awarded Diploma in Public Health from accredited British institutions. In 1973 and within the framework of the general policy of Higher Education, the School of Hygiene became an autonomous of evaluation on the part of the World Health Organization, whereby the syllabuses were revised and the duration of the study course was increased to four years in 1982, after which students were to be awarded the Diploma of Public Health from the Institute itself.

 
   

In 1988,the School of Hygiene was renamed to School of Hygiene and Environmental Studies the Diploma degree was upgraded to the level of B.A and hence the Faculty was joined to the University of Khartoum in 1991, after a comprehensive re-evaluation of its status, regulations and syllabuses to conform to those of the University. And renamed again to faculty of Public and Environmental Health. 

 
   

The Faculty is located in the medical campus to the West of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, near railway Station.

 
   

Teaching Staff:

 

There are (21) members of the teaching staff as follows:
(3)    Assistant Professors.
(9)    Lecturers.
In addition to (9) teaching assistants and (4) technicians.

The Library:

 

There is a specialized library in the Faculty consists of (2,500) volumes as well as (18) different periodicals. The library accommodates about (75) students B.Sc. and post graduates students as well as members of the teaching staff and students from other universities.

   

Laboratories:

 

The Faculty has (4) Laboratories:
(a) Food hygiene and safety (1)

(b)
Food hygiene and safety (2).
(c) Medical Entomology & Parasitology
(d) Chemistry and Water.

   
 

Each laboratory accommodates approximately 40 students and benefit B.Sc. students together with the post graduate students and members of the teaching staff who are engaged in research activities as well as students of the other universities.

   

Research Activity:

 

A number of researches were accomplished by members of the teaching staff and graduate students including research studies on water supply and sanitation, solid waste, occupational health, food hygiene & safety, public health, epidemic and endemic diseases, Parasitology, Entomology, disasters, meat hygiene, milk hygiene, vaccination,  health education and other health – related problems.

Activity:

 

The Faculty undertakes consultative tasks for international orgnisations in the fields of environmental and public health. It also organizes short courses extending to nine months in the various aspects of environmental health.

   

 External Relations:

 

The Faculty has strong academic relations with international institute in the fields of environmental health these includes the international Centre of Environmental Health Activities in Oman the World Health Organization (WHO), the African Medical Research Foundation in Nairobi, UNICEF and the High Public Health Institute at the University of  Alexandria in addition to organizations inside the Sudan also. The Faculty participates in environmental consultations inside and outside the Sudan.
