Foundation: |

The history of the foundation of the
Faculty of Engineering goes back to 1939 when the School of
Engineering at Gordon Memorial College was established under the
supervision of the Department of Education. It awarded at that time,
Diploma of Engineering Studies. The School developed to be a
University College under a scheme of dual relationship with
University of London in 1947 and eventually as s Faculty of
Engineering and Architecture of the University of Khartoum science
the foundation of the latter in 1956.
The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture is located within the
main University campus, on the Western side. |

teaching staff:-

Students: |
|
|
|
The Faculty currently enrolls (3000)
students in its various departments (345) engineers graduated for
the (1997-98) and (7080) engineers have graduated from the Faculty
since 1941 until 2001, (39) students have been awarded the graduate
diploma. (254) students the M.Sc. degree and (26) students the Ph.D.
degree since 1961 until 2001. |

Laboratories:
|
|
|
|
There are more than (40) laboratories
in the Faculty distributed among the different departments. Each
laboratory accommodates about (150) students used by the B.Sc.
students, graduate students and members of the teaching staff.
There are also workshops, used, for students' training. |

The Library: |
|
|
|
The Faculty has a
specialized library
containing approximately (30,000) volumes in addition to
periodicals, dissertations and other relevant material. The reading
room accommodates about (350) students and the library meets the
needs of the B.Sc. Honours and graduate students as well as the
teaching staff. There are also specialized libraries in each of the
faculty nine departments. |

Research
Activities: |
|
|
|
The faculty presents research
opportunities and studies in the various engineering fields of its
nine departments. In addition to its contribution to industry and
the attempts to find solutions to its problems particularly through
the variety of the specializations of the teaching staff which
encompass most of the Engineering Sciences. These researches and
studies are usually published in the Sudan Engineering Society
Journal as well as in international and regional journals and
periodicals. As far as financing for research is concerned, the
Faculty of Engineering and Architecture exerts its efforts to
coordinate and cooperate with other Engineering Institutions in
order to find solutions to the problems facing them through
conducting applied researches. |

Cultural
Relations: |
|
|
|
The Faculty of
Engineering and Architecture shares relations with most of the
Faculties of Engineering inside the Sudan, whereby many members of
the teaching staff undertake teaching and supervision for the
students of the Faculties of Engineering in other universities. Some
members of the teaching staff are on secondment to some of the
Faculties of Engineering in the Arab world and some others spend
their sabbatical leaves at similar faculties in the Arab world,
Europe and United States. |

Public
Services Offered by the Faculty: |
|
|
|
The Departments of the Faculty organize seminars
and training programmes where Engineering courses appropriate to the
specializations of the different ministries are taught. For example,
the Water Recourses Seminar for the Ministry of Engineering Affairs
and the Structural Design Seminar for the engineers of the same
ministry, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering. There
are seminars and progrannes offered by the Department of Electrical
and Electronic Engineering for the engineers and technicians of the
Sudan Telecommunication Company (Sudatel), the National Electricity
Corporation and the National Television Corporation. The Department
of Mechanical Engineering organizes training sessions in the fields
of Machines and Production for Engineers in Governmental ministries
and departments. |
