About The Faculty

             
               
         

Foundation:

 

The Faculty in collaboration with the Higher Teachers Institute started the idea which goes back to 1956 when an urgent need was felt to train teachers for the secondary schools and to replace expatriate teachers by their Sudanese equivalents. An educational committee, composed of some educational and guidance professionals from the Sudan and abroad, recommended the plans concerning the foundation of this Institute. The foundation was carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Guidance (then the Department of Education) and with the assistance from UNESCO.

 
   

A graduate of this Institute was awarded Diploma Degree after having completed four years study course to become a teacher at the secondary schools. The Diploma was upgraded in 1971 to a B.A. degree to be awarded by the University of Khartoum. The Institute was joined to the University of Khartoum in 1974 to become the present Faculty of Education.

 
   
The Faculty is located in the North of Omdurman along Sharia Al Wadi.  
   

Objectives:

 

The Faculty of Education aims at qualifying the students academically and professionally as teachers in the secondary schools in the Sudan as well as training teachers at the primary level. Also among the aims of the Faculty are the promotion of curricula, teaching methods in general education, and educational research.

   

Teaching Staff:

 

The Faculty has (79) members of the teaching staff:|
(3) Professors
(15) Associate Professors
(25) Assistant Professors
(36) Lecturers
The Faculty also has (13) teaching assistants and (10) technicians.

   

Students:

 

(2424) Sudanese students are enrolled presently, besides (4) foreigners (1998). Since its establishment, the total number of graduate students has been (4940) graduates, of whom (288) were honours graduates. Of these (251) graduated in (1997-1998) with General Honours degree. (500) students  graduated with the qualification of the Higher Diploma, (297) graduated with the Master Degree and (53) student with the Ph.D. degree.

   

The Library:

 

The Faculty has a Main Library that contains about (3000) books and subscribes to (6) periodicals. There is a special library for each department. There is also an educational library specifically for educational studies. It accommodates about (150) students and meets the needs of the students of the Faculty, the postgraduates and some students of other faculties of Education in the other universities as well as members of the teaching staff.

   

Laboratories:

 

The Faculty has (16) specialized laboratories, (6) for Biology (4) for Chemistry, (2) for Home Sciences and (4) for Physics. Each of these laboratories accommodates between (45-60) students. There is also a special laboratory for the post graduate students of the Faculty. The laboratories benefit the B.A. and post graduate students as well as the members of the teaching staff.

   

Research Activity:

 

The Faculty promotes various research in all the above mentioned specialisations on the Diploma, M.A. and Ph.D. levels. Members of the teaching staff undertake several researches in different academic departments. The Faculty publishes the Journal of the Faculty of Education in Arabic.
