About The Faculty
 

             
               
         

Foundation:

 

The Faculty of Economic and Social Studies started in the late thirties as the Department of Accounting in the Higher Schools of Gordon Memorial College. At the beginning of the fifties the subjects of Economic, Social and Political Sciences were taught as parts of the curriculum of the Faculty of Arts. In 1958 an independent Faculty of Economic and Social Studies was inaugurated, consisting of the Departments of Economics, Social Science, Political Science and Business Administration. The students of the Faculty were allowed to study some of the courses in the Faculty of Arts. Later the Department of Business Administration was established as an independent school. Some new departments such as those of Econometrics and Social Statistics were added to the Faculty as well as a center for development  studies and research and a centre for health economics.

*The premises of the Faculty are at the Central University Campus.

 
   

Teaching Staff:

 

There are (49) members of the teaching staff in the Faculty, of whom there are:
(4) Professors
(22) Associate Professors
(15) Assistant Professors
(8)  Lecturers

The Faculty also employs 17 teaching assistants.

   

Students:

 

There are (1372) students in all the departments of the Faculty. Those who graduated in the year (1997-98) were (273) students with general and honours degrees. Those who were awarded the post Graduate Diploma were (872) students and (36) students have been awarded the Ph.D. degree since 1961.

 
   

The Library:

 

A specialized library is available in the Faculty, containing about (6000) books and (300) journals. It accommodates about (150) students. The library is used by the B.Sc. students and postgraduate students of the Faculty and students from other universities, in addition to members of the staff.

   

Research Activities:

 

The Faculty of Economic and Social Studies takes special interest in field research, particularly in the areas related to economic and social development in the country. This manifests itself in the activities of the Development Studies and Research Centre, which was affiliated with the Faculty, in addition to studies accomplished by the departments. The staff members undertake expert consultancy services for both public and private sectors in various projects. The departmental libraries abound with university theses and dissertations submitted by higher degree students of the Faculty.

 

   

 Cultural Relations:

 

The Faculty maintains strong relations with universities within and outside the Sudan. Inside the Sudan, the Faculty cooperates in the fields of joint staff exchanges with Omdurman Islamic University, Omdurman Ahlia University, East Nile University, Al-Nillain University and Ahfad University for Women. It also has external relations with Maryland University in the United States, Bergen University in Norway, British and some African  universities, as well as with some international organizations, such as the UNDP and the WHO.

 

   

Public Services Offered by the Faculty:

 
1- The staff members of the Faculty provide organizations and individuals, in the public and private sectors, with feasibility studies and advisory services. In addition to teaching and conducting academic research.
2- The Faculty organizes conferences and discussion groups for economic, political and social studies.
3- The Faculty arranges academic tours for students and economic organizations inside the Sudan and abroad.
4- The Faculty organizes computer training courses, and provides short courses in the fields of Economic Development, Planning, Gender Studies, and Development.
