Foundation: |

The faculty was established as a dental school in 1971 at the
faculty of medicine, and was upgraded to a faculty of Dentistry in
1992. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Objectives: |
|
|
The faculty aims at the advancement of dental public health in the
Sudan,
through training of dentists and medical enlightenment, particularly
at the regional level during student health field trip. The Faculty
is also involved in the study of the problems of dental through
academic research and advancement of professional proficiency by
postgraduate studies. |
|

The Faculty employs 27 teaching assistants - 4 has MSc locally and
4 enrolled for higher qualification aboard & 19 will be enrolled.
Also, there are 4 technicians; 7 lab assistants & attendants |

Students: |
|
|
There are (650) Sudanese students and (29) foreign students in the
faculty. Now 815 students were graduated from year 1976 to 2003
with B.D.S Honors Degree & on 1999 (1) students was awarded The
clinical Doctorate in Restorative Dentistry (DDS – RD) and (1)
student awarded the PhD on Biochemistry in 2003. |

The Library: |
|
|
|
There is a faculty library which accommodates Professional reference
books; student's text books and projects with periodoicals. |

Laboratories: |
|
|
There is four laboratories in the faculty for the training in the
field of orthodontics appliances; Prosthodonticts; fixed
prothodontics and Phantom Head for preoperative skills. They
accommodate (14) students |

Research |
|
|
|
A considerable number of research have been carried out in the
fields of Preventive Dentistry; The causes & management of Oral
cancer and tumors; Studies about the relationship between these
& tobacco. Also, salivary gland tumors & their management.
There are also research studies about jaw tumors; incidence &
pattern of cleft lip and palate and the effect of fluorine in
the public water supply. Clinical research is also being
undertaken in the field of odontometrics in The Sudan. |

Cultural
Relations: |
|
|
The Faculty has established good relations with European & Arab
Universities, such as with the Faculty of Dentistry of Bergen in
Sweden, the Faculty of Dentistry (Ankara University) Turkey. The
faculty also maintains academic collaboration with Arab universities
in the field of training and research such as the University of
Science and Technology in Yemen and in agreement with Arab
University of Medicine in Tripoli regarding the exchange of
examiners. The faculty is also a member of the Arab Faculties of
Dentistry |

Publications:- |

Sudan Dental Journal (SDJ) - a joint publication with The Sudanese
Dental Union - was recently published its first issue in Jan.2003.
